A warranty should be a good thing. It’s there to protect your investment from situations outside of your control. Warranties give you peace of mind should those situations occur. You feel good thinking you are “covered,” right?

Unfortunately, most ceramic coating manufacturers have taken advantage of this, holding you hostage to continued business with them for required maintenance inspections and required product purchases at an additional and ongoing expense. Having such requirements could raise real questions under consumer protection laws, including the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act.

Additionally, proper care of a coated vehicle is completely within the owner’s control. This gives manufacturers wide discretion to deny warranty coverage, which happens to the overwhelming majority of customers who ever actually try to file a claim. Alternatively, coating manufacturers place the burden of customer issues directly and needlessly at the feet of the individual small business owner, who is then faced with taking a financial loss just to keep a customer satisfied.

Let’s look at the exclusions some of these “warranties” have, a compilation taken from actual terms and conditions:

Not Covered

  • Commercial vehicles
  • Damage from extreme weather conditions
  • Vehicles over a certain age
  • Matte or satin paint finishes
  • Swirl marks, marring, scratches, scuffs, scrapes, chips, water spots, chemical fallout, or spillage
  • Single-stage paint
  • Raw plastic trim and cladding
  • Wheels
  • Non-factory applied paint

Warranty Void If

  • Not washed every 2 weeks (or more frequently where road salt is used)
  • An annual inspection isn’t completed (voided or reduced)
  • Specific manufacturer products aren’t used exclusively
  • Manual or automatic wash brushes are used
  • Neglect is determined by the manufacturer
  • Alteration or modification to vehicle surfaces
  • Clearcoat failure, regardless of cause
  • Repainted areas aren’t reported and recoated within 30 days
  • Damage from normal wear and tear, misuse, or misapplication

This is why the warranty behind your coating matters just as much as the coating itself, and why who you choose to do the work matters more than which specific product ends up on your paint.
